October 2005 to Mombasa

Following is Benson's report.   The number who went was 22, plus Lorna Were from Bomet Bible Institute.

 Faith Evangelistic Team: Mombasa Mission

From 19th to 22nd October, 2005

If it is disclosed the time of the Son of Man’s coming, I hope none will be found unprepared.  By 6:30 pm on October 19th, all the team members were well prepared and very smart-looking.  One would assume that they were heading to the moon, because the majority wore T-shirts bearing the motto “Man on the Moon.”

By 7:00 pm we all gathered in the college chapel where we fellowshipped.  Rev. Joshua Kyule gave us an encouraging sermon from Acts 3:4-8 and advised us, when we arrive at Mombasa city, we should not be tourists but be focused on winning souls to Christ.  At 7:25 we left college and by 9:30 pm we boarded Randa Coach to Mombasa.  By six in the morning of 20th October we found ourselves in Mombasa awaiting our host to pick us up from the bus stage.

We were warmly received by Bishop Were and his family in their house at Kilindini.  After prayer led by the Bishop, we were given up to noon to rest; then we moved to work.

We had a fellowship in Bishop’s house and our group chairman, Pastor Samuel Kogalloh, divided us into two groups. One group under Kogalloh went to Mutongwe, and the other group under Benson and Paul Cheruiyot went to Kongwea.  The team members worked vigorously in a very hot environment, walking from one house to another, preaching on the way to the passers-by.  In many instances we met open confrontation from the Islamic community who were in their fasting month of Ramadhan, and did not want even to hear the name Jesus mentioned.  In the evening we all managed to return to Bishop Were’s residence safely.

The Word of God did not fall in vain, and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit the following had their hearts touched and received salvation:  Alice O, Welllington A, Claris A, Caroline A, Eunice O, Joyce and Tabitha N and Magdalene O.  Peter M and Alice asked prayers for their families.

Day II, 21st October:  We had our morning devotion and Bishop Were blessed the team.  Thereafter we divided ourselves into two groups.  Samuel’s group was to cross the sea towards Shika Adabu, while the other team under Benson went to Kisauni.  The day was very challenging, being very hot.  In both groups, members walked throughout the day from one house to another, preaching and encouraging believers in houses along the roadsides and on the shades.

The following met the true light of the world and received salvation: E Otieno, J Ayubu, M Achien, V Atieno, C Otieno, J Odondo, M Amuko and J Awake.

Day III, Saturday, 22nd October:  After morning devotion, the team members were set to evangelize within Highlevel Kilindini. We went in two’s and vigorously knocked at almost all the doors in the estate.  There was much opposition from Muslims, but the Holy Spirit was at work as usual, and before we met for our break about a dozen people had confessed Christ as their Savior.  After lunch we sailed across the sea to Shika Adabu Holy Trinity Church of Africa compound, where we had an open air meeting.  Benson preached from Luke 16:19-31 about “Life After the Grave.”  Over 50 people attended.

Day IV, Sunday, 23rd October: All H.T.C.A. churches in Mombasa had their service in H.T.C.A. Kongwea Church where we attended.  Sammy Musli preached about The Grace of God.  About one hundred people attended.

Observations:  It is with regrets that many serving elders and women leaders are unsaved.  They make the bulk of those who surrendered to Christ during our outreach.  This makes the church not to grow spiritually, as the leaders are not spiritual.  We pray for similar outreaches so that our churches may grow in grace and faith.

We also thank the Lord that due to our outreach here, Kiswahili Service was launched and the congregation declared that it will be the official service, and not vernacular in this Kiswahili- dominated city which has a hundred other tribes to join this populous church.

In conclusion, this outreach also gave us a good exposure to rub shoulders with the Muslims, whom some of us had just been reading about in World Religions!  And we were thrilled to apply the defense that we have learned.

God bless you all for your contribution in prayers, advice, encouragements, and funds.

Further note of praise from Bonnie:  Jacob Tibebu was able to visit the Lighthouse for Christ Eye Center in Mombasa, and they graciously consented to do his needed eye surgeries without charge.  He is having cataracts removed on both eyes, and a tumor taken care of.
